Boracay 2024: Day 2 - Water Activities Gone Wild! (Or, How We Almost Lost a Jet Ski)
Okay, so Day 2 in Boracay was supposed to be all about chill vibes and turquoise waters. Instead, it became a hilarious, slightly terrifying, and utterly unforgettable jet ski adventure. Let's just say I'm now officially a certified (almost) expert in navigating choppy seas on a temperamental machine.
First things first: the location. After riding the speedboat, we arrived at the jet ski floating platform area. We were asked to put on life jackets – a wise precaution, as it turned out! They also rented goggles for 150 pesos because of the wave mist, but I opted to wear my eyeglasses to avoid paying extra. We registered and were briefed by the jet ski staff. Think stern-faced lifeguards who looked like they'd wrestled a shark or two in their time. The safety briefing was intense – enough to make you swear off water sports forever – but also secretly hilarious. They basically said, "you're on your own, buddy!" (Just kidding… mostly.)
The jet ski training? Ten minutes of frantic hand gestures and slightly panicked explanations. I'm pretty sure I understood about 30% of what they said, but hey, how hard can it be to steer a jet ski, right? Wrong. Very, very wrong.
Our 30-minute jet ski session was split between two pairs: me and Mom, and Benigno and Badet. Armed with our trusty 360° camera (because, of course, we needed to document every exciting experience), Mom and I took to the waves. The waves were less "gentle ripples" and more "angry ocean monsters."
Mom, bless her heart, was surprisingly game. I tried to drive fast, but the jet ski was bouncing around like a bucking bronco. It was a thrilling rollercoaster of ups and downs, with me occasionally yelling, "Mom, hold on!" (She probably thought I was going to lose control and send us both to Davy Jones's locker.) After a few nerve-wracking minutes, we decided discretion was the better part of valor and headed back to shore, slightly damp, slightly breathless, and very, very alive.
Benigno and Badet's turn was… less successful. They managed to get the 360° camera on themselves, but their SD card decided to give up the ghost. So, sadly, their epic jet ski adventure remains undocumented. We're still mourning the loss of that footage. It would have been legendary.
Overall, it was an absolute blast. Despite the rough waves, and the slightly malfunctioning technology, the whole experience was incredibly fun. Would I do it again? Absolutely! Next time, though, I'm bringing extra waterproof cases for the cameras, and maybe a slightly less temperamental jet ski.
