STK ta Bay Cebu City

I’ve been telling in my previous blog post about Cebu’s unique dining experience. If someone will ask me the best place to dine in the Philippines, Cebu City will surely be in my top list. I love eating but I’m not familiar where the best restaurants located are. Whenever I eat in a good restaurant, it is because I am with a friend who has more knowledge and experience in finding good restaurants. I am lucky to have a couple of friends who like to dine and spoil their palates. When we were in Cebu, it was a great opportunity for us to try the different restaurants in this humble city one of which is the famous STK ta Bai at 6 Orchid Street, Capitol.

STK ta Bai! Restaurant is well-known here in Cebu as the place where families usually gather and have dinner together. STK means sugba (grill), tula (broth), kilaw (raw/ceviche), it's a typical fish serving in Cebu and most Visayan cities in which a fish is cut and prepared in three different ways as grilled, soup and raw or dipped in vinegar like ceviche as appetizers. STK ta Bai is a home-come-restaurant with real homemade dishes. The restaurant is in a home, I presume the ancestral home of the owners. The ambience is that of an old home - they even have vintage 1960s dial telephone! The restaurant reminded me of the Spanish era ancestral home in our province, growing as a little boy. So, the restaurant is worth going to, if only to look at the authentic antique pieces the owners left for their clients to peruse and enjoy.

Their staff will greet you and accommodate you warmly as you arrived in their place. Every corner of the restaurant has a different classic design; some are designed with 50s or 60s dress, some with old china wares, and some with antique vases and pots. Many celebrities have come to visit STK ta Bai Cebu including Tito Sotto, Jake Cuenca, Mikoi Bondoc, and Rafael Rosell.
The place is very relaxing especially the larger room at the back with its multiple collections of antique furnitures, colonial items, antique music instruments, religious icons and interesting collections of china for viewing while waiting for your orders to be served. It somehow makes you feel like an invited family guest and not merely as a paying customer who wants a good yet reasonably priced meal. The entrance to this restaurant speaks for itself - you can see photos of celebrities, politicians, foreign dignitaries who have dined there. One gets the idea that a lot of people do eat in STK Ta Bai. Getting a reservation is advisable before actually going to the place as many frequent the place to have lunch and dinner. More power & keep up the good work!
The food will NOT disappoint you they've got really good food. The panga (tuna jaw) was fresh and their secret sauce really extricated every ounce of exquisite juice from the grilled jaw. The bottomless lemonade is so refreshing and so perfect with the grilled seafood. Other than the panga, try the kinilaw (raw fish marinated in vinegar and chopped onions and other spices). Sumptuous grilled tuna belly, to baked scallops, calamares and even to wild and exotic foods like turtle, ulo sa kanding. But apart from fish they also serve other fares us crabs, squid, scallops, and meat and poultry dishes even goats meat.
When finally the bill came, it was an even bigger surprise! Real value for money! For the quality, variety, and amount of food we had, we were shocked at the bill the total cost of our orders merely reached Php4,000. Yes, their food is not expensive and the size of each order is good for 12 persons. Great service, unique ambience, excellent food, and reasonable price, there's nothing more to ask of this restaurant in the exotic study of Cebu. Certainly the best STK restaurant in Cebu City!
