I ♥ Peak Tram Hong Kong 03-01-2013

Peak Tram Hong Kong

The peak itself is a 5/5 must do experience but you would be better off catching the bus or if you are fit walking up to the peak. But I will definiely suggest to try it during summer because of poor visibility.

It is  the fastest route at 10 minutes from the lower level terminus to the top. The history behind the tram and the steep angle at which you travel is pretty awesome. However, we really hated the horrific queues at either terminus. It doesn't matter if you buy your tickets directly at the counter or if you buy online or if you use an octopus card. There are NO priority lanes.

When you get to the top, you then go up to the top floor of the tramway station, where the observation deck is. Looking down the steep hillside on Hong Kong, Victoria Harbour and Kownloon is spectacular, even when visibility is poor. If you like to hike or walk distances, you can then follow Lugard Road around the summit of the peak - it's about 6-km (my guess), and gives you not only great views, but an insider's view of fancy Hong Kong houses.

At the top of the tram, and nearby, there's a small mall with eateries and souvenirs ...

How to go to Peak Tram Hong Kong
From Hong Kong Island

Take the MTR to Central station.

Take exit A (World Wide House exit) out of the station to the surface.

Once above ground, at the corner of Connaught Rd Central & Pedder Street, take the stairs to go up to the pedestrian walkway overhead.

Walk north toward the Victoria Harbor along the pedestrian overpass (above and along Pedder St. and then it turns into Man Yiu St.)

You'll see the Star Ferry pier with its clock tower. The bus terminal for the number 15C bus (often open-top) is on your right on street level just in front of the pier below the clock tower.

The bus will take you to the lower Peak Tram terminal (a 5-minute ride). Ride the tram all the way up to the upper terminal.

From Kowloon

Take the Star Ferry heading for Central from Tsim Sha Tsui.

Once you get off the Star Ferry in Central and out of the pier to the road, walk a bit to your left along the road to the the bus terminal for number 15C bus (often open-top).

The bus will take you to the lower Peak Tram terminal (a 5-minute ride). Ride the tram all the way up to the upper terminal.
At the Peak Tram station, you can get a one-way or round-trip ticket (I think the return journey of a round trip ticket is only good for the same day). There usually is a line for the Peak Tram, but it moves fairly fast. Once you are on the tram, ride it all the way to the end.

If you don't want the excitement of riding a cable tram, there are buses that go up to the peak, but they take longer and are not as interesting a ride.
From Victoria Peak back to Mong Kok by Star Ferry

Star Ferry goes only to Tsim Sha Tsui. From Tsim Sha Tsui to Mong Kok, you have a few choices:
Walk: takes about 1 hour. Along Nathan Road.

Bus: Taks #1, #2 or #6. They all go along Nathan Road and pass through Mong Kok
MTR: walk to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station (5 to 10 min) and take MTR to Mong Kok station.
By Foot - From MTR Central Station

It’s a pleasant walk from Central to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus. Along the route, there are a few famous Hong Kong landmarks.

From MTR Central station, make your way to the J2 exit and walk up to the ground level. Turn right, through Chater Garden, cross Queen's Road Central, and make your way up Garden Road. You will pass the Bank of China Tower and Citibank Plaza on your left and St John's Cathedral on your right.
