I ❤️ Sumaging Cave - Sagada (2012) - January 26, 2012

We reached Sagada at approximately 3pm after a 12-hour road trip from Manila. This was my first time traveling such a long distance on a bus, and I must say, it was an experience I can take pride in. Initially, I had the impression that the only notable sight in Mountain Province would be the rice terraces, but I was pleasantly surprised. In Sagada, Mountain Province, there is one place that should definitely not be overlooked - Sumaging Cave.

Sumaging Cave is a highly sought-after tourist destination and is widely regarded as one of the top caves in Sagada. Referred to as the "Big Cave," it played a crucial role as a sanctuary for Filipino soldiers during World War II, providing shelter from the Japanese guerrillas. This cave is connected to other caves in Sagada, including the Lumiang Cave, and typically requires approximately 2 to 3 hours to fully explore.

The registration fee for visitors is P10.00 per person, while the guide fee ranges from P250.00 to P350.00 per person. During our trip to Sagada, we decided to hire Joey, a 17-year-old tour guide from SAGGAS, an association of tour guides in Sagada. Despite his young age, Joey proved to be incredibly helpful and entertaining. He had a great sense of humor, constantly telling jokes and impressing us with his clever pick-up lines. While others may choose to hire a van for transportation, we opted to explore Sagada on foot, a highly recommended activity.

As we walked along the unpaved road leading to Sumaguing Cave, the cold mountain breeze enveloped us, creating a truly invigorating experience. The scenery that greeted us was straight out of a movie - majestic pine trees, stunning rice terraces, and the mesmerizing sunset. It was a breathtaking sight that left us in awe. Once inside the cave, we encountered numerous fellow tourists, all echoing the sentiment that this caving adventure was an absolute must-do.

Our thrilling family adventure commenced as we cautiously descended down the treacherous path of steep, slippery, and inclined rocks, coated in bat guano. With only the glow of kerosene lamps, hand-held by our knowledgeable guide, illuminating our way, we were spellbound by the mesmerizing limestone formations that surrounded us. Gripping tightly onto the rocks, we proceeded with careful steps, as the descent grew increasingly steep and slippery.

In addition, the cavern housed an immense colony of bats, resulting in an abundance of bat guano scattered throughout. Further along the trail, our guides instructed us to remove our sandals, as navigating the steep rocks barefoot proved to be more manageable and secure.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking and awe-inspiring natural wonders that adorn the cave. Marvel at the peculiar rock formations, each donning amusing and captivating names such as "The King," "The Queen," "Little Prince and Little Princess," "Birthday Cake," "Passing Snake," and "The Turtle." Along your journey through the cave, you'll encounter a delightful miniature waterfall, a serene and inviting pool, and majestic stalactites and stalagmites adorning the path. Brace yourself for a thrilling adventure as you navigate through narrow passages, squeezing through tiny openings, traversing steep inner pathways, descending with the assistance of rustic ropes, and even immersing yourself in waist-deep, refreshing waters.

Time flew by, and without realizing it, we had immersed ourselves in the thrilling world of underground cavern spelunking for an amazing three hours. Successfully navigating our way out, our group felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in having conquered Sumaging Cave. It's no wonder many tourists opt for the iconic "I SURVIVED SAGADA" T-shirt, as spelunking in Sumaging encapsulates the essence of the entire Sagada experience. For those seeking an even more adventurous adrenaline rush, the "Cave Connection" is a must-try. The extended journey was undeniably worthwhile.
